As the cold weather approaches we thought it would be appropriate to send a reminder that the time is fast approaching to winterize your rain barrel. So here’s what to do….. Remove the tap, turn your barrel upside down and drain completely. Move the barrel into a garage or shed if you can, but if you are leaving it outdoors, continue to store upside down to prevent dirt, snow and ice from accumulating. If you have a double or triple outlet style, reconnect your downspout to allow melting snow to drain away from your foundation. If you have a diverter kit, just undo the hose and insert the winter plug that came with the kit. Leave your downspout in its usual position. If you already have frozen water in the barrel, put it out in the sun, or bring indoors to melt the ice, then remove the tap and drain as outlined above. Keep your fingers crossed that the plastic fitting has not yet cracked! Then count the days until you can bring it out next spring!
