As the old expression goes – “Winter is not over yet!” We have two significant storms coming toward us that will have the potential to impact transportation and communications as well as other infrastructure. Environment Canada will be issuing storm advisories starting tomorrow morning (they have already issued a storm alert/special weather statement for all of Nova Scotia). The first storm, primarily a snow event mixed with some rain arrives around 9 PM Tuesday night and lasts all day Wednesday. A total accumulation of up to 50 cms ( about 20 inches) of snow is expected but could be reduced by rain. Associated with this storm are strong winds and a very low barometric pressure which could produce a storm surge at either of the high tides at 5 AM or 6 PM Wednesday. The computer model is not well enough defined just yet to say for sure – see warnings from on the Environment Canada web site on Tuesday. This storm has formed in the Gulf of Mexico and will come zipping up the Atlantic coast and pass just east of us (we will be on the cold/snowy side) on Wednesday. A change of a few degrees in the course of the storm could result in a dramatic change in storm impact so stay tuned to your favourite weather station. The snow that does fall will be heavy, wet and very slippery with the usual impacts on travel and power/telephone/CATV lines. A second storm with a heavy rain fall is expected, starting on Saturday morning with up to 55 mm of rain (about 2 inches). Again the models are all over the place but there could be up to two days (Sat and Sun) of rain at times heavy during this event. Neither barometric pressure or winds appear to be an issue with this rain storm so it should be nothing more than “just another heavy spring rain!” But, as always, these storms are subject to change. To save e mail clutter, no further SCEEMO bulletins will be issued unless there is a dramatic change for the worse in either of these storms.
