As the world spins into the New Year, think about this: We have NO idea now what technology will be like 5 years from now, never mind 20. Commercial GPS, the Worldwide Web, Kindles, Bluetooth, WiFi, flat screen TVs, eBay, social media, smartphones, SIM cards, Globe, Smart, Vodafone, call centers, e-tickets, DVDs, digital SLRs, USB ports, 3-D printing -- none of that existed in 1994, and they were not even a dream in the public eye. TOPGUN and Tom Cruises F-14 Tomcat are gone. The last fighter pilot has been born. Kodakchrome, Kodak itself (your smartphone cant even autospell Kodak), typewriters, LORAN, dumb terminals, green screens, Easycall, word processor terminals, penpals, party lines, the 109 station-to-station overseas telephone operators, travelers checks, Betamax, laser discs, Encarta, floppy disks, photostats, blue Par Avion airmail, Mobiline, Beeper 150, Piltel, cellphone antennas, and the monster Motorola portable phone. All gone. Huge brands will disappear. Think McDonnell Douglas, Grumman. If in 1994 you had asked Encyclopedia Britannica, Fuji Film, Barnes and Noble or Newsweek who their competitors would be, they would never have said Wikipedia, Google, the Cloud, Kindle, Rappler, or Huffington Post, none of which even have any kind of printed hardcopies. You think Kodak should have been scared? Well, Blackberry, SanDisk, Samsung, Apple, IBM, Nokia are all fearfully trying to look around the corner. Anxious already? Think about democracy, privacy, the climate, marriage, food safety, clean water. All under extreme pressure. Then theres this thing that has changed, will keep changing, and may disappear -- YOUR job. After all, 2015 will be gone in less than a year.
