As this day dawned in 1943, my Dad was probably pondering his first full day as a 35-year-old (his birthday was October 13th), focusing on the mission ahead, and getting to know the crew he had just been assigned to on the V-Packet. As the day ended, he was spending the first night of many as a POW. He was assigned to Stalag 17b, Barracks 17A. I was fortunate to communicate with the pilot of his B17 in 2000, and he was kind enough to share his recollection of their flight on that fateful day. The crew photo includes everyone except my Dad. He was added as the RO and the RO in the photo was listed as a waist gunner on the missing crew report that was filed. The drawings are from a sketch book that my dad kept while he was a POW.
