As this essay is in an anthology called Vs. it is important to first look at what this word means. ‘Versus’ can be defined as things in opposition, perhaps a battle; or, contending forces. It implies duality. Within the present context, the duality in question is two-fold but, in essence, related – that of the conscious and the unconscious, of dreaming and waking. Within practical magick these are two of the most important states of consciousness, and facilitating and improving their interaction is often one of magick’s primary aims. To tap into the unconscious, dreaming state, whether whilst actually asleep or not, and drawing upon the inspiration, wisdom and various forces of change embodied within are fundamental to many paths and practices. Some even go so far as to suggest that the subconscious is the greatest magician of all and that without the aid of the subconscious there can be no magick.
