As time permits maybe what I have written will help to heal the divisions between us, in the hopes of building a better place for all of us to accept and to treat each other with Peace and respect. This is my 15-minute TED Talk that I will give this week on the campus of UCLA. I wont use any notes, and I will speak from the heart as I am writing now. ted Is it possible that we are ALL equal? Is it possible that we are all human? Is it possible that we all have feelings and dislike being hurt by worlds and actions of others? Is it possible that we all just want to be accepted by others for who and what we are no matter who and what we are? Is it possible that the power of an embrace by another is so powerful that it cuts away our ignorance? Then is it possible for all of us to embrace one another, no matter who and what we are, and just Love one another no matter who and what we are. This has been my dream ever since I was a young child living in Los Angeles. I didnt understand then why people in the early 1960s would chase me and beat me up because I was Mexican. I didnt understand then why black people were beaten and spit upon because of the color of their skin. It certainly didnt matter to me then or now. I didnt understand then why people teased my brother and uncle for being who and what they were because they acted effeminate. It certainly didnt matter to me because I loved them. As a young child, I saw things with a different lens. My eyes didnt see color, or people acting effeminate as wrong or different. It was how it was then, and how I wished it were now. We live in a hate filled world. If we dont act and talk and walk like you, we begin to judge, compare and yes, even hate. We live in a have and have not world. Where we judge others as less than us if they dont have what we have. We live in a world where we call each other names like the N word, and the G or F word and pretend we are so much better than others. Some claim, I have never used those words, yet fail to remember.... if we THINK it... we have said it. We live in a world where we would rather put our elderly parents into gawd awful Medicare run nursing homes and steal and sell their homes and belongings that they worked hard for over the years and waste it away on things for themselves verses helping and caring for their parents as I did until they passed on. We convince ourselves that what our parents worked hard for was really theirs in the first place as an inheritance, so why prolong it any more. Put the parents away and rape them by stealing their valuables in a Take it now attitude while we still can. We live in a world where we would much rather step over a homeless person lying on the curb in the street than reach down and pick them up and take them to a safer place. Much less reach down and say something kind. Instead we look at them as scum of the earth. A drunk, lazy, or whatever word I cant even mention now. It is the coward’s way. Just walk over them, pretending that they dont exist. Oh, that will make it better right? We live in a world, where all we think and care only about is ourselves. Our own joy. Our own pleasures. We live in a Me First world and careless about anyone else. And if we do care it usually is because we want something that they have. But does it really have to be this way? Does it really? Are we not better that the animals that feed off each other. Are we not better than vulture picking at each other until we have nothing else to pick on? It is Sunday, June 2014, and as I write this, I know, I will get hatred from so many who disagree with me, who will do anything to prove what I have written to be wrong. Yet, if they look in the mirror long enough, they might realize that what I have written is so true yet they will never admit it. You see I have the inner desire to find a way to ignore the hatred that I see each and every day. But to ignore it is to pretend that it does not exist. But it does. Sometimes, I wish I could save the world from ourselves, but I cant. I can only save myself in the hopes that I might lead a life that is honorable and with dignity. Something my parents always taught me to be no matter the circumstances. I can hear them now even though they have been gone since 2006, be good, dont fight, dont hate, be love and be safe. Yes, I have hope and I have dreams that our world will become a place where we accept each other as we are, and not try to change each other to conform to our ways verses allowing people to just be whom and what they are. Change begins with each of us. We are the ones that can work hard and little by little make little changes in a big world. Those little changes go a long way. So dont despair that we are not making enough change as fast as we would like. Change will come one day.... Hope reigns supreme. It is all that I have to give in an effort to make my world a better place. To end, let me share a brief story with you: I remember a story about a Catholic Priest who went out to walk in the village with a young seminarian. The priest said: Come my son and lets go and preach the Gospel in the village. So they walked and walked and later returned home. And the Seminarian asked, Father, I thought we were going to preach the Gospel in the Village. And the Priest said.. We did preach, by how we walked, and cared for the sick and the faint hearted. We need not say anything... we only to live and act in a way that when people see us, they know that we are people of Hope and Peace. And so, to close, I will continue to do the same as I have since I was a little boy. To walk with Hope and Love for all no matter who they are or what color skin they have. To love all people equally and to walk with a renewed spirit and Hope that others will know that I am a man of peace and so much Hope that they too might be inspired to do and be . . . the same. My name is GdeM, and this is who I am and whom I chose to be well knowing that I have many faults and imperfections, but I am who I am. Have a great week everyone. Do our very best to be and see the world in a different lens, in that we might be the source of the change that we so dearly need in our world that is so filled with hate and judgments. I write this in Honor of my Gay Brother and Uncle who never lived to see a world at peace. Take care, and I will see you on the flip side . . . -GdeM Plano, Texas
