As today is Remembrance Day and also marks the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance, we thought it opportune to recall the amazing story of Old Boy Frank Doolan (SPC 1908) who was a key figure in the construction of the Shrine. Doolan was a young sapper in the war and returned to civilian life as a surveyor who was also one of the key figures in the establishment of Legacy in Australia. In 1925, Doolan was engaged to survey the location of the site for the Shrine of Remembrance. Its construction was controlled to exact measurements to determine the placing of the aperture for the famous ‘ray of light’ on the Stone of Remembrance. Doolan and astronomer Dr Joseph Baldwin completed the arduous calculations to position the aperture so that a ray of natural sunlight falls onto the Stone over the word “love’ at precisely 11am on 11 November each year. Frank Doolan - another Old Boy hero. Lest we forget!
