As usual, Kaid Benfield does an excellent job here explaining why certain kinds of density (historic urban neighborhoods) feel right. Its all about scale. A historic downtown usually tops out at about 6 stories, and has a mix of building heights. So walking down the street doesnt feel like walking through a tunnel. Skyscrapers have their place, but most people prefer the older brownstone neighborhoods in cities, or Main Streets in historic small towns. Stevens & Associates specializes in designing projects in this kind of walkable historic downtown. Projects such as The Brooks House contribute to a friendly pedestrian environment, and entice people to visit, live, work, and shop downtown.
