As we approach the season of Advent, I want to share with you all an icon that I wrote for a church in Hawaii. I have taken the classic form of Our Lady of the Sign and adapted it to images that speak to the Hawaiian Culture. The Virgin appears flanked by two feather kahili, symbols of royalty in ancient times. Her mantle is actual kapa cloth applied to the icon. Her halo, and the halo on the Christ Child are unprinted kapa, also applied to the icon. The leaves in her halo are kalo. Kalo is a root used in making poi, literally the bread of life in old Hawaii. The Child wears a feather cape. such capes were only worn by kings in times past. A male lei is draped around her neck. Maile is very precious and its fragrance is without parallel. In our culture where the Christmas season seems to begin at Halloween, I believe that it is important to keep the Season of Advent as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ at Christmas.
