As we are coming up to the first major photo getting opportunity... sorry convention in Melbourne I thought that I might just quickly put out a post about getting the best pictures you can. A good photographer can only do so much without your help! So it is always good for you to have a few good character poses in mind, because so many of the pictures taken of you will be one of us stopping you - getting a picture and moving on. Mix it up - if you just have one pose or no poses you are going to see the same picture over and over again - give yourself every chance of getting a picture that you like, by just posing differently. You are cosplaying the character because there is something about them that you love - so show it off - show us what you love about it and let us capture it :) If you are swamped, ie one photographer asks for your picture and suddenly a whole heap of people are taking your picture - change poses often. If you are really lucky and have a wrangler that knows what they are doing they can usually point you to which camera is taking a picture so you can focus on that camera - if you dont have a wrangler - do it yourself - look at each camera - hold for a few seconds then look to the next one. Photographers - please always ask the cosplayers for permission to take their picture, and if they say no (which is rare but does happen, they might have to go meet someone, they might not be feeling well, who knows), just thank them anyway and move on. If you are like me and like to get candid pictures of cosplayers as well, that is fine but go and show them what you have taken after you have, so that they are aware you took it and that they know you were being a creeper. I would also make a personal plea to photographers to get pictures of as many people as you can - yes some of the cosplays are way more elaborate & eye catching - but I think that we under estimate the esteem boost we can give people by asking to take their picture. I love the look of surprise and joy that I get at times, stopping someone in a very simple cosplay and asking for their picture - they cant believe that someone has noticed them and you can see them lift. Cosplayers if you have a favorite photographer dont be shy in asking them if they would take your picture as well - we love the feeling of being loved and appreciated just as much as you do :) We might not always be able too, depending on our schedule - but you never know! Most of all have fun, be polite, appreciate the skills and talents of each other.
