As we honor Lincoln this month at the Lincoln Highway Experience - TopicsExpress

As we honor Lincoln this month at the Lincoln Highway Experience museum, below is an excerpt from the Ligonier Echo from 1914 about him. Sept. 23, 1914 There is scarcely a man, woman or child whose patriotism is not stirred on hearing the name of the great Abraham Lincoln. He was not only our war president, but one of the greatest of our presidents and also one of our greatest men. He was from among the common people, born in a log cabin on the frontier, reared on a farm and educated from borrowed books. His life was simple and his nature sympathetic. No one appealed to him without a hearing. He was a president of all the people. He needs no memorial to perpetuate his memory. When it was proposed to build a national highway across the continent and to distinguish it with the name of Lincoln, the proposal at once met with popular approval and today one of the greatest highways in the country is well under way from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Ligonier has the distinction of being located on this great highway and Ligonier people enjoy the benefits of this great roadway. What have we done to help build this Lincoln Highway? Not very much. However a movement has recently been started for the purpose of erecting two splendid, appropriate arches on this Highway – one at either end of the town – for the purpose of not only boosting the Lincoln Highway, but also the town of Ligonier. The persons who inaugurated this movement believe the building of these arches would be a good way of showing the interest and appreciation the citizens of Ligonier and vicinity have in the improvement of our public highways and there is no one subject that ought to receive a more hearty and unanimous support of the people of community than that of improving its public highways. They ask for the hearty cooperation of every organization and individual who is interested in making a bigger and better Ligonier.
