As we witness our region falls victim to sectarian violence, terrorism and extremist ideology that is hijacking the future of an entire generation, we in Jordan remain steadfast in our belief that our evolutionary home-grown political reform approach, that provides citizens with the opportunity to fully participate in deciding and building their own future, is the most effective way to protect our nation from the chaos that surrounds us. Challenges are not an excuse to postpone our reform program, but as it is our approach, we must continue to transform these challenges into opportunities. For that reason, I share with you my fifth discussion paper titled, ‘Goals, Achievements, and Conventions: Pillars for Deepening Our Democratic Transition’. It addresses fundamental democratic values and practices that I hope will guide stakeholders in our political system to internalize and apply them while exercising their responsibilities towards our citizens, who deserve the best from their representatives and the quality of government services.
