As worthy of Putin’s Russia, the loyal pro-government media are making the case over and over again that the unrest is the work of enemies of the state. They are ignoring the obvious, which is that it is the heavy-handedness of the police, and the state at large, that has turned a marginal march into a mass movement. For the government now to turn a shocking blunder into a witch hunt would only do more damage, the threat to investor confidence has come not from the protests but from the arbitrariness of the authorities’ reaction
