Asansol-Durgapur police arrests INTTUC colliery leader admin | Jul 25, 2014 | Comments 0 Two days after Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) served an ultimatum of closing down its J K Nagar Colliery in Raniganj near Durgapur if police do not take action against a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, who allegedly beat up a manager, police arrested the alleged leader. Chunnu Lal Mishra, who leads the Trinamool Congress labour arm INTTUC at J K Nagar Colliery was arrested yesterday (24 July) by the Asansol-Durgapur police. One might recall that B K Singh, a senior manager working with the ECL’s J K Nagar Colliery was assaulted on July 18 by the INTTUC leader Chunulal Mishra and later threatened by text message. Another manager was also threatened over the phone. ECL management at the J K Nagar Colliery on 22 July issued a notice asking 1,200 miners of the colliery to join work in the neighbouring collieries of their choice as they expressed their helplessness to shut down the mine within four days if the police do not take action against the alleged INTTUC union leader. miner-at-work-raniganj Miner at Work Vineet Goyal, Asansol-Durgapur commissioner of police, said yesterday: “Mishra has been charged under sections 506 IPC and 66A of the Information Technology Act and will be produced in court tomorrow.” Mishra has been suspended as secretary of the Trinamool backed colliery union at JK Nagar in Raiganj, after what was described as an internal probe. Hareram Singh, general secretary of INTTUC-backed Koyla Khadan Sramik Congress, said: “We found Mishra guilty of assaulting and threatening ECL managers. We will not tolerate such activities in industries.” The twin actions against Mishra contrasted with the government’s belligerence on controversial politicians such as Anubrata Mondal, Manirul Islam and Tapas Paul. Niladri Roy, director (technical), ECL said: “We have been informed by the police that Mishra has been arrested. We are keeping a watch on the situation and the decision of closing down the mine will be revoked after a meeting on Saturday.” Facts such as ECL being Bengal’s largest employer that gives work to 70,000 people and supplying 20-25 per cent of the coal for power generation also weighed heavily on the government after the ultimatum served by the ECL authority, sources said.
