Asheville-Buncombe Community Relations Council will sponsor “Use of Force: A Community Forum on Law Enforcement Protocol” on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at the Dr. Wesley Grant South Side Center The Asheville-Buncombe Community Relations Council will sponsor “Use of Force: A Community Forum on Law Enforcement Protocol” on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at the Dr. Wesley Grant South Side Center located at 285 Livingston Street in Asheville. The forum will consist of a presentation segment by Chief William Anderson of the Asheville Police Department, Sheriff Van Duncan of the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office and civil rights attorney Frank Goldsmith. These presentations will provide information on the training that law enforcement officers receive regarding use of lethal force, North Carolina state law regarding the use of lethal force by law enforcement and the procedures that follow what after lethal force is used by law enforcement. A breakout session will immediately follow the presentations, allowing open conversation and community dialogue. We know that Use of Force can be a sensitive topic in the community, that it why it is important to have a neutral third party at the table to help facilitate healthy dialogue. Both education and dialogue are necessary when addressing any community issue. When one of those components is missing, it is hard to make true progress. The Asheville Buncombe Community Relations Council is dedicated to helping improve police community relations, by hosting important community meetings and forums, assisting local citizens in navigating the formal police complaint process, and nurturing positive relationship building between local law enforcement and local citizens. It is our hope with any of our forums, by providing a safe space to learn, share thoughts or experiences, and have community interface, that equitable and healthy relationships can be established and maintained, Lucia Daugherty, Program Director, Asheville-Buncombe Community Relations Council stated. This forum is free, and open to the public. For more information, please call Lucia Daugherty at the Asheville-Buncombe Community Relations Council at (828) 252-4713.
