Ashley Fears has a question: My 2 year old female Dane - TopicsExpress

Ashley Fears has a question: My 2 year old female Dane (Princess Buttercup) is very laid back and sweet with everyone in the family, including our 8 year old and 9 year old kids. But... she has had a few instances of nipping kids in their faces, not biting really, but what we kind of call chomping. It usually leaves no mark or a little red scratch. We keep her separated when guests come over (because she will jump in their face and bark not snarling but I think maybe she thinks shes protecting us?) and when we are out on walks if we are handling her shes fine, but we are very cautious in her handling. But while we were camping this weekend and she was on a leash she nipped at a couple of kids. One was around for the entire three days and was constantly bothering her and I cant say I truly blame her for snapping at the kid (since he kept doing it over and over again despite being told by his parents to stop), but the other was a little girl who had come up when I my back was turned to pet her and she nipped her, drawing some blood). Is my dog vicious? Shes never done anything like that with my two kids, but I was seriously freaked out that I was going to get sued, she was going to have to be put down, or that next time it might be an actual bite. I will be enrolling her in training because it is unacceptable behavior, but is there any hope for her? Will training work? Should I be scared to leave her with my kids (sometimes when I go for my runs I let her have run of the house with the kids because I know she would protect them if an intruder broke in)?
