At 11am, one hundred years ago, a shooting happened on the corner of Appel Quay and Franz Josef Street in Sarajevo, Bosnia, that had just become a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The victims were the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, nephew of the Emperor Franz Joseph, and heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his wife the Duchess of Hohenberg, Sophie Chotek. It was their 14th wedding anniversary. Earlier that morning, even though he had survived a bomb thrown at their car, the archduke had decided to continue the tour after his visit to the City Hall, but change the route. Unfortunately his driver had not been informed and it was due to the fact that the car took a wrong turn, and slowed to turn back onto the Appel Quay, that the assassin, a Sebian nationalist, was able to take the shot.
