At a little past ten last night, mommys phone rang. One of my little friends was quickly losing his battle with astrocytoma. Benjamin cried that he wanted Della woof. As a 19 month old boy took his final breaths in the wee hours of the morning, I lay next to him in a hospital bed with his little arms wrapped around me as if I was a stuffed animal. Ben was no longer in pain but his moms pain was going to get even worse; no parent should have to bury his/her child... its just not normal. Rosanna asked if we could stay with her for a few hours. Rosanna, a pediatric oncologist herself, screamed that with all her knowledge she couldnt make Ben better, she couldnt help Ben to smile one more time. Tears streamed down Rosannas face as she held me in her lap, I gently placed my head on her shoulder and wrapped her paws around her neck. She whispered, Stella, none of Benjamins doctors could make him better, but you did. You helped a baby smile when he had a thousand reasons not to. You made a mom smile with your silly antics when I felt like I would never smile again. I spent hours cuddling with a grieving mom and Rosanna begged mommy, Please dont take Della woof out of my life. I lost one angel I dont ever want to lose two others. Mommy held back tears and said, Of course, Della woof will always be your friend. As the sun rose and mommy and I left, Rosanna said the most beautiful thing, An angel in the book of life wrote down my babys birth, and whispered as she closed the book, Too beautiful for earth. Friends, Rosanna is a friend here on facebook and I think we can show her shes not alone and that my friends are her friends.
