At a time when brothers and sisters do not think twice about making their good deeds public. At a time when the Muslim celebrity culture is out of control. At a time when people beautify their prayers for other people. At a time when people take on esteemed titles for themselves. At a time where people are more focused on the duniya than their hereafter, comes a hadith that addresses these problems. The Prophet (sallahu alayhi wasallam) said: The most enviable of my friends is a believer with little property who finds pleasure in prayer, who performs the worship of his Lord well, who obeys Him in secret, who is obscure among men, who is not pointed out by people, and whose provision is a bare sufficiency with which he is content. (Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 1352) So the people closest to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) are those who do not focus too much on worldly matters but find pleasure in prayer, who try to worship Allah to the best of their ability, who do their good deeds in secret, who are unknown to people due to their good deeds and have little wealth, yet are happy with it.
