At approximately 1107 hours on August 11, 2014 the New Hampshire State Police Special Enforcement Unit was conducting a traffic enforcement detail with the State Police aircraft on Interstate 93 southbound in the town of Canterbury. At that time the aircraft clocked a motorcycle traveling southbound at 134-MPH in the posted 70 MPH speed zone. Additionally, the motorcycle was observed to be passing vehicles in the breakdown lane. Soon thereafter Troopers working on the ground in the area watched as the motorcycle cut between the lanes of traffic passing more vehicles before rapidly accelerating away. The Troopers chose not to pursue the motorcycle and instead requested that the aircraft follow the motorcycle from above. The observer in the aircraft did so, watching the motorcycle pass by vehicles at speeds estimated to be between 150-185MPH. The motorcycle was seen using both the left and right breakdown lanes and the center of the highway to pass traffic. The motorcycle then took Exit 15W passing vehicles on the ramp and then again between the lanes of traffic on Intrastate 393 westbound. The motorcycle was then observed to pull in behind a business on North Main Street, in Concord, and stop amongst other parked vehicles. Responding Troopers were directed to the exact location of the motorcycle and its operator by the planes observer. The motorcycle was identified as a: 2009 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 The operator was identified as: Daniel Thibeault Age: 31 of Swansea, Massachusetts Thibeault was taken into custody and charged with Reckless Conduct, Disobeying an Officer, and Driving After Suspension and is being held on $1000 cash bail. The NH State Police Special Enforcement Unit regularly interdicts elevated speed violations and other aggressive driving behaviors. Its members patrol across the state often utilizing the State Police aircraft during commuter traffic periods and holiday travel times with the goal of keeping New Hampshire’s roadways safe for all residents and visitors.
