At #churchcom14, Cardinal Dolan shared 7 tips to be effective Church Communicators: 1. We need to have a real sense of quality and professionalism. 2. Never be afraid to tell the truth, both the bad news *and* the good news. Dont let people hear about it first via the press. 3. Every communication outlet has a bias; Catholic communicators should also have one: pro-church. Sometimes Catholic news outlets do nothing but criticising bishops. Give positive news equal attention. People look at Catholic communicators for the real story. 4. We should not stereotype media. Always be courteous, civil and friendly, even to those that attack you. The more you talk with journalists and show them respect, the more they will respect you. 5. We must be catechetical in our approach. Never miss an occasion to explain your faith, the simpler the better. Always look for teachable moments. 6. Always put Jesus first. Fr. Barron once said that you best introduce non-americans to baseball by taking them to a game, not by explaining detailed rules. Introduce people to Jesus before talking about dos and donts. 7. We have to know our audience. Tailor your message to your audience. Ask professionals to help you use the new media. The church needs communicators that not only know the faith, but also know how to communicate it in a colorful and attractive way.
