At eleven P.M, exactly one hundred years ago today, Britain - TopicsExpress

At eleven P.M, exactly one hundred years ago today, Britain declared War on Germany. British incentive for declaring War on a nation whos peerage shared blood lines with its own Royal Family, was due to Germanys invasion of Belgium a direct contravention of the 1839 Treaty of London, which recognised the Independence and seperation of Belgium from The United Kingdom of the Netherlands. At the conference, Britain promised the security of this new nation and should its independence be threatened or violated then Britain and its Empire would defend Belgium and its interests. The inevitable involvement of other nations such as Imperial Russia (who also had Royal blood ties to both Britain and Germany), The Austro-Hungarian Empire, Italy and France as well as all their Imperial colonies was due to the previous 50 years of pact making between the two sides. Austro Hungary, Germany and Italy on the one side, and Great Britain, France and Russia on the other. When fighting began in 1914, both sides advanced swiftly and with confidence in their own strength. Many people on both sides of the fighting believed that they would be home for Christmas and the dispute would be settled within weeks all being well. However, when outdated cavalry charges met modern mechanised gunfire the advancements on both sides quickly ground to a halt and Europe found itself hosting a War that it had never seen the likes of before. The barbarous and devastating fighting would not cease for another 4 years until the eleventh of November 1918. The War was not officially ended until the twenty-eighth of June 1919 with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. To commemorate the Tragic loss that would ensue for the next few years we are all asked today to join our brothers and sisters up and down the Nation this evening by turning off our lights and lighting a single candle in remembrance of this monumental day from 10pm to 11pm. Please like and share this status to show your support and to help make others aware. Thank you!
