At exactly 11:59 p.m. on October 31st each year, students gather together in Woolsey Hall for the Yale Symphony Orchestra Halloween show. A ticket to the YSO Halloween Show is a hot commodity on campus: Woolsey Hall is the largest performance space in New Haven, seating 2,691, yet this years tickets sold out in less than two minutes. For those who dont secure a YSO Halloween Show ticket, there is a live simulcast in a large lecture hall so all can partake in the fun. Both orchestra and audience members come adorned in costume. The instrumental sections of the orchestra enter one by one, each group in a different costume theme. In the past, orchestra member costume choices have included grey shirts representing 50 Shades of Grey and full sections that portrayed different stages of Miley Cyruss life. During the show, the YSO accompanies a silent film that they have spent months shooting and editing (with all original content) with a live soundtrack that includes selections ranging from repertoire staples to arrangements of pop songs. Over the years, films have included cameo appearances of actor James Franco, director Woody Allen, and politician John McCain. This year, President Peter Salovey hosted a Halloween party in Commons Dining Hall leading up to the concert, and the Woolsey doors opened at 10:45 with a pre-show hosted by Yale Radio featuring student musical groups including Slam Dank and Low Strung. #YaleTraditions
