At first glance I wanted to grumble over our overly litigious society, but this seems appropriate. nypost/2014/12/14/rescued-kayaker-sues-fdny-for-injuries-during-rescue/ The one time the NYPD intervened on a tour I led, the situation may have been worse for it. The NYPD had to intervene by circumstance, even if not by need. A patrol boat was on site because it happened at the Brooklyn Bridge waterfalls art installation. To not act could have resulted in accusations of negligence. (Two assistants now claiming LIC Community Boathouse leadership -- without election, of course -- probably didnt instill confidence; John McGarvey fell out of his kayak and Ted Gruber kept taking photos rather than helping. Please feel free to inquire about other witnesses, and please insist that Gruber show you his full photo series of the participants drifting and capsizing. If he denies that it exists, Ill introduce you to people whove seen it.) When the police did act, they towed the rescued party face-forward into current by life ring. The papers reported that, once aboard and then back to the pier, he was vomiting saltwater on the deck. No small wonder. I dont imagine that rescuing a dunked kayaker is much different than any other swimmer. Maybe easier, given the increased likelihood that he or she might be wearing a life vest. So is there a rescue training gap our first responders might need to address?
