At last nights meeting, the East Lansing City Council approved - TopicsExpress

At last nights meeting, the East Lansing City Council approved moving forward with my Percent for Art public art requirement ordinance. The proposal will be formally introduced and referred to the Arts Commission, Planning Commission and Downtown Development Authority on August 6 for their review and recommendation. The “Percent for Art” ordinance will reinvigorate the City of East Lansing’s moribund Public Art Fund. While East Lansing is known as the “City of the Arts,” public art in our community is dealt with on an ad hoc basis rather than following an established process supported by a sustainable funding source. A mountain of evidence demonstrates that cities gain cultural, social and economic value from public art. It adds uniqueness to our communities, humanizes the built environment and invigorates public spaces. Places with strong public art break the trend of blandness and sameness and give communities a sense a place and identity. The adoption of a Percent for Art program will be a significant step forward for our community. THANK YOU to all of the residents who have already contacted the City Council to express support for this proposal and to those who attended last nights meeting to speak in support. There will be a number of other opportunities to help move this ordinance forward in the next several weeks. Stay tuned!
