At last we arrive at the big guns in the Senior Dance Competition - TopicsExpress

At last we arrive at the big guns in the Senior Dance Competition at the Sheffield IJS last month...all two couples! First to skate in the SD, and taking 1st place with a score of 43.38, were Olivia Smart and Joe Buckland representing Nottingham. Skating to Diablo Rojo and Crepuscolo (Twilight On The Sea), 17 year old Olivia and 21 year old Joe skated with speed, energy and silky smoothness throughout . Their program contained good twizzles and received all positive GOEs. In 2nd place in the SD were Carter Jones and Richard Sharpe representing NISA, with Richard wearing a particularly striking white and gold matador style costume and Carter in a red dress. They demonstrated good unison on their steps, and nice matching leg lines. Unfortunately Richard had a nasty fall towards the end of their program and they received no mark for one of their required elements, but recovered well enough to perform a great lift to finish with Carter in an excellent splits position. They received a score of 34.88 that included the loss of a point for the fall. Unfortunately due to sustaining an injury during his fall in the SD yesterday, Richard was in a lot of discomfort and Carter and he had to withdraw from the FD after the warm up. I can tell you however that their FD was due to be to music from Mary Poppins and that Carter was wearing the most stunning dress! And so we were down to one! Olivia and Joes FD to music from Sunset Boulevard left broad smiles on the faces of the skaters, coaches, families and audience alike. With Olivia dressed in a rich purple dress their program again received only positive GOEs, was performed with speed and looked very polished for so early on in the season. They were light on their feet and included very good twizzles, solid lifts performed at speed and a spin performed bang on the spot in their program. They scored 72.50 for their FD, giving them a total score of 115.98. I chatted with Joe afterwards and he indicated to me just how happy he and Olivia were to be able to produce this level of performance at this early point in the season :-) ! JCB
