At least 40ha of land nationwide has been allocated for youths to get involved in the agriculture sector. Youth and Sports deputy Minister Datuk M. Saravanan said the initiative, through the New Affirmative Action Movement (NAAM), required the 100 participants to plant chillies. “All these produce will then be purchased by NAAM and sold to the Federal Agricultural and Marketing Authority (FAMA),” he said, adding that they received overwhelming response for this initiative with over 500 applicants. He added that Indians need to look at agriculture as a niche sector as planting chillies alone could generate income of between RM5,000 and RM20,000. “Many people are not aware of this huge potential in agriculture. Once this pilot project is successful, we hope to expand to include other crops including rock melon and even cucumbers,” he said after meeting Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Mohamed Khaled Nordin recently. Saravanan, who is the founder of NAAM, said that Johor had allocated at least 6.5ha in several locations in the state. He added that under the project, NAAM provides the land, training and other assistance while the participants grow their produce and sell it to NAAM.
