At one of our recent board meetings there was a statement made that the greatest asset that Elizabeth Park & Rec has is the trees and the grass. I have heard this same statement a few times in my first year as Park Director. May 17th were the first little league baseball games of the year. It was Saturday morning at around 9:30am. When I realized something. I realized that the people of our community are our greatest asset. I never really bought into the idea that trees and grass were what made up the personality and character of our park. An asset is something tangible the is worth money. There really is no price that can be placed on our biggest asset though. You cant put a price on what I heard while at Casey Jones Park on Saturday May 17th. Our assets are invaluable. I walked to my truck that was parked near the rodeo arena to get a schedule for one of the parents. As I started back toward the baseball field I stopped at the wood framed fence between Casey Jones North field and the rodeo parking lot. I looked across the western horizon and could see most of the town of Elizabeth. The view of the town was set in a canvas of blue skies spotted with a few white cotton clouds. The ball fields were emerald green. On the north field were two little league baseball teams. One was being coached by a law enforcement officer and the other a route driver. On the south field the coaches were an oil worker and a hunting outfitter. The one thing each coach held in common was that they were dads of a player or two on the field. The stands were scattered with many other walks of life and variable careers paths. However, today they were brought together to watch boys and girls play our countries favorite past time. From my vantage point I heard clearly the sounds of laughter, fun, family and friends gather in a fellowship. I heard our voice. I heard our biggest asset. The people in our community make this park special. Colorado is full of beautiful scenery with trees and grass, but this park..... Elizabeth Park & Rec is one of a kind because of the folks that choose to spend their valuable time in our park.
