At one point, there was considerable discussion as to what greeting would be correct for usage when picking up the phone. Hello was suggested by Edison, and the English speaking world has never been the same. By 1889, central telephone exchange operators were known as hello-girls due to the association between the greeting and the telephone. The runner-up, Ahoy-hoy was suggested by Bell, and is what Mr Burns uses as his telephone greeting.
