“At that moment, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom” (Matt. 27:51). At what moment? The moment Jesus died. The curtain—sixty feet tall and thirty feet wide—in one instant was ripped. The barrier between man and the Holy of Holies was removed, priests were no longer necessary go-betweens and animal sacrifice would no longer atone. Then and there, God welcomed us into His presence twenty-four seven. The separation was removed; the barrier made necessary by sin was dismantled. It was a top-down job—a gift from God to man. “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).
