At the moment, the tight labour market and efforts to improve wages appear to have helped increase the wages of those in the bottom 20th percentile. The government has started implementing minimum wages on a sectoral basis, starting with the cleaning industry. Minimum wage for cleaners now begins at $1,000. All these efforts came after years of calling by opposition members and academics to impose minimum wages in Singapore.
