At this time of calamity amongst the Muslim Ummah (in Palestine, CAR, Burma, Sri Lanka and other places) I would like to give the following advice to those who lead prayers in our communities to revive the Sunnah of our Prophet ﷺ in making dua’ at these times of calamity, in the last Rak’ah of the five prayers for one month. This is known as Qunoot an-Nazila. Below are some evidences and a dua’ we can use in the qunoot, inshaa’ Allah. Narrated Nu’man ibn Bashir. The Prophet ﷺ said, “You see the believers being merciful among themselves and showing love among themselves and being kind, resembling one body, so that, if any part of the body is not well then the whole body shares the sleeplessness (insomnia) and fever with it.” [Bukhari] Narrated Anas ibn Malik. The Prophet ﷺ supplicated in Qunoot for one whole month, calling down the wrath of Allah upon some Arab tribes (when his missionaries to them were killed), then he left it (didn’t supplicate Qunoot anymore). [Bukhari, Muslim, Nasa’i, Ibn Majah, Ahmed] Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas. The Prophet ﷺ supplicated with Qunoot continuously during a whole month in Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr at the end of the prayer. He recited (Qunoot) after rising from Rukoo’ in the last Rak’ah, and then he called down the wrath of Allah upon Banu Sulaim, Rei’l, Thakwaan and ‘Osayyah, and the followers (his companions who were praying after him) were saying Ameen.” [Abu Dawud, Ahmed] The Prophet ﷺ used different dua and wordings at different situations. However, from a narration we learn that the second rightly guided khalifa – Umar ibn Al Khattab recited the below dua when he supplicated against the disbelievers [Ref: Bayhaqi, 2/210]: اللهم إنا نستعينك , ونؤمن بك , ونتوكل عليك , ونثى عليك الخير , ولا نكفرك اللهم إياك نعبد ولك نصلى ونسجد , وإليك نسعى ونحفد , نرجو رحمتك , ونخشى عذابك , إن عذابك الجد بالكفار ملحق , اللهم عذب كفرة أهل الكتاب الذين يصدون عن سبيلك Transliteration: “Allaahumma inna nasta’eenuka wa nu’minu bika, wa natawakkalu ‘alayka wa nuthni ‘alayka al-khayr, wa laa nakfuruka. Allaahumma iyyaaka na’budu wa laka nusalli wa nasjudu, wa ilayka nas’aa wa nahfid. Narju rahmataka wa nakhsha ‘adhaabaka, inna ‘adhaabaka al-jadd bil kuffaari mulhaq. Allaahumma ‘adhdhib il-kafarata ahl al-kitaab alladheena yasuddoona ‘an sabeelika Translation: O Allah, verily we seek Your help, we believe in You, we put our trust in You and we praise You and we are not ungrateful to You. O Allah, You alone we worship and to You we pray and prostrate, for Your sake we strive. We hope for Your mercy and fear Your punishment, for Your punishment will certainly reach the disbelievers.
