Athens Vs. Sparta It was 1976, maybe 1977 and I was a freshman in High School at the old Poland Junior High School. Coach Dave DiRenzo was my world history teacher. He was a great teacher; I will never forget when we had to learn the Capital cities of the world. The test was simple- he gave you a country, you named the capital, all or none. I will never forget the feeling waiting to go into the room, not to mention the growing panic as he stated “Denmark”. I remember thinking “Copenhagen”- but was that right? Did that just pop into my head because that was the brand of snuff we all used in ninth grade. Seconds turned into hours, the self doubt was killing me- I finally blurted out COPENHAGEN. He smiled and said “right, send in the next one”. It was over. We were studying ancient Greece. I remember I made a cast Greek coin out of lead for extra credit. I also remember that he assigned us to debate Athens vs. Sparta. I was assigned Sparta. I thought I was totally screwed- but when it was over I successfully made the case of why the Spartan’s were superior to the Athenian’s and why it was a more stable civilization. Driving to the hospital today, I listened to Glenn Beck talk about the Ukraine and how he hoped Putin would get a cold and die. He talked about the potential for WW III and the relative impotency of the west to do anything. He talked about Poland and how we would likely do nothing should Russia decide to annex that country again, how we would basically abandon a NATO ally. My first thought is NATO is dead. Then I realized that Putin is a genius, both tactically and strategically, and we are stuck with Obama, Biden, and Kerry. Then I remembered my debate from ninth grade. West vs. East, the United States vs. Russia- Sparta vs. Athens. I won the debate because I made the argument that a lean, militarized government was more stable in the long run. I am not talking about individual freedoms nor quality of life or any other social matters. Russia will win. Their people are use to suffering; ours have become fat, stupid and lazy. Our forefathers paid in blood to create and defend the constitution. Now we have created an ignorant majority that can’t even read the constitution yet believes that it entitles them to free health care, free food, free housing, free cell phones and anything else that our government may perceive that they need. Now we are paying with our privacy, our freedoms and our wealth. Putin will win because I can’t support the “entitled” ones and fight the Russian’s at the same time. Actually I do not want to do either. I wish one of our leaders had Putin’s brains. I was almost going to say that I wished they had his balls, but if you are a brilliant strategist, you will never have to use them. Classic Sun Tzu- “The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting. In the practical art of war, the best thing of all is to take the enemys country whole and intact; to shatter and destroy it is not so good.” We need to become Sparta. Maybe that’s what Obama, his Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and FEMA are really afraid of. Maybe that’s why DHS keeps buying up all the ammunition. Remember the Battle of Thermopylae, don’t underestimate the power of a patriotic army defending native soil. We need to have the courage to say enough is enough. We need to take our country back from those subverting our constitution. The odds may seem overwhelming, but courage, determination and sacrifice at the Battle of Thermopylae ultimately lead to victory over the Persians and preservation of the Greek empire. The Greek empire eventually fell- again from a self created “entitlement” class. We are far down that road.
