Attached you will find a short movie with two sequences I filmed along some fire tests a few weeks ago. In the first sequence there was “nearly no wind at all” ... at least this was what you might have thought ... as there is often (always?) some wind present you will see this by the movement of the curtain. Imagine how many cubic meters per second of smoke would flow through this interior door with the blocking device and the movement you can observe in this movie. In the second sequence there is a ventilator blowing from the right side which might creates a differential pressure of about 25 Pa (just a guess – I did not measure it!). And “Yes” – the volume flow through this doorframe with the blocking device will be less than without it – but: because the ingoing flow will be forced to flow in low and therefore mixing from turbulence will be limited: the benefits from enforced ventilation will not be much less than without the blocking device.
