Attachment Exercises This is a three part exercise... First get something you truly value. A ring, watch, a musical instrument, a treasured heirloom, an old a battered journal, an article of clothing, a keepsake from a lost love, a work of art, anything. Set it in front of you. Now, in your mind smash it. See it in fragments before you. Now note the sense of loss and the suffering which comes from just this imagining. This is attachment. Second. Get a small thing. Nothing too valuable, irreplaceable or dear but something you like. Now think of someone who would also like it. Then give it to them with a free and open heart. Third, go somewhere you might find an elder. Grandparents or even a shopping mall or market. Now, without being obvious, and with respect, gaze upon their withered and wrinkled face, their frail body and white hair. Know that this too is your fate. Accept this. Now look again and see the young person who still dwells within the withered body and appreciate the beauty of the wheel of time and then consider the freedom which comes from release from birth. See in your mind that all things shall perish but be made anew and with the new insight you have gained meditate upon the meaning of the Four Noble Truths. The Four Noble Truths 1. Life means suffering. 2. The origin of suffering is attachment. 3. The cessation of suffering is attainable. 4. The Noble Eightfold Path leads to the cessation of suffering.
