Attempt two: Electric Boogaloo My names Joey Beachem, and Im a Sophomore Aerospace Engineering major! Im from Western Pennsylvania, but I graduated high school from North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. If there are any other students of NMBHS coming to ERAU, let me know! Its always great to see a familiar face. I am a Brother of the co-ed service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega and my (Now ironic) nickname is Speed Racer (Look for me around campus, Ill wear an over-sized Blue/Gold jersey with my nickname and a big 239 on the back). I highly recommend joining APO if you long to commit yourself to a lifestyle of selfless service to others, all while making lifelong friends along the way! Im not afraid to admit that I dont take life too seriously most of the time, and I roll with the punches to make the best of things. If you ever see me around campus, Ill probably be joking with people, or being a major nuisance (Half of my humor is self-deprecation, and the other half is bugging my closest friends) to them. Not exactly the best trait to have, but some of my friends have described me as The kind of puppy that chews up your shoes, but you cant stay mad at. Be forewarned. (For the record, I do not eat shoes) I got my nickname by being an absolute power-Freshman, joining every group that I could, and always having someplace to be. I was aptly named because I would always have to run off to a meeting after talking to people, never staying in one place for long. Coupled with my life-long love for NASCAR (My late-great-uncle would watch it with me when I played with Hot Wheels. I was only ever interested in Jeff Gordon, though. I dont watch it anymore), and the name stuck. I have yet to watch the cartoon (Or is it an anime?), but Im going to fix that the next time I get the chance. My nickname is now SUPER ironic, considering that, as of August first, I have passed my drivers test on the fifth attempt. Pennsylvania requires a parallel parking test, and I just couldnt do it right the first few times. Im a safe driver, other than that, and my car is not a death trap with me behind the wheel (Although it has been leaking brake fluid, which IS pretty death trap-y, but Im going to get it fixed this week). I have a craving in my SOUL to learn how to drive, and own, a manual transmission. If anyone wants to help me with that, Id greatly appreciate it! Just dont make me parallel park unless youve got good insurance. Speaking of cars, I am also taking a High Performance Vehicles minor, alongside a Psychology, Entrepreneurship, and Environmental Studies. My plate is pretty full, to say the least. I am probably also going to Double Major in Computational Mathematics. I have also been involved with the Embry-Riddle Resident Student Association (ERRSA), who you will all meet at some point during move-in, and they are a great group of people to hang out with (For reasons that I will not disclose, I am unfortunately going to have to leave the organization this year). I am also involved with the (Sadly little-known) DIY/Project-inclined group, ENDEC (Engineering Design Club), who are ALSO a great (Smaller) group of people. I had a short-lived attempt at joining The WIKD 102.5 FM (But never really committed) as a radio host, and had my first job with The Avion as a copy editor. Although I never really helped out in the hangar due to not wanting to walk ten minutes (Or less) to the other side of the airport, I also joined the ERAU MicroJET Team over in the research hangar. They are working on a great project, and their work is very impressive! I encourage you all to join all of the groups that you can! If you stay in your rooms all day, only leaving to go to class, youll miss out on a lot of what the university has to offer. However, always remember to put education first and foremost! My interests are widespread, but I will try to list a few of them off the top of my head. My favorite movies are District 9, Pacific Rim, the Tremors series, RoboCop (Past and present versions. I could go on and on about how I looked up to RoboCop as a child. Probably not healthy that my role model was a dude that was massacred and brought back to life as an emotionless machine, but whatever), the Star Wars films, the Marvel film series, Wreck-It Ralph, Tron, and giant monster movies (My first, and favorite second only to the 2014 version, is Godzilla vs. Biollante. Pacific Rim has an extra-special place in my heart, but I like it more for the giant robots). Basically science fiction first and foremost My favorite anime (As scarce as they are. I always thought that anime was weird as a kid, so I havent actually watched any until the past few years) are FLCL, Cowboy Bebop, Attack on Titan, Ghost in the Shell, Speed Racer (Even if I never get around to watching it. I think Im obligated to love it), Gundam (I havent gotten around to watching any of them yet, but GIANT ROBOTS, MAN), and basically anything similar to those. Patlabor and Appleseed are on my probably-never-going-to-get-around-to watch list. Youre probably noticing a trend here. Music tastes can easily be summed up as Anything besides country and summed up even further with a list of artists, but we could be here all night. Kavinsky, Power Glove, Daft Punk, Goldfish, Queen, Auvic, Jason Mraz, Coheed and Cambria, Rustie, Gorillaz, and C2C are all artists that come to mind (Mainly because they make up a lot of my roadtrip playlist that I just made today). Special mention goes to The Protomen, who you should DEFINITELY check out if youre a fan of the Mega Man games (I could go on for hours about how their main two albums are some of the best music Ive ever listened to and how the story line in them is SO GREAT and that its a gift to Mega Man fans everywhere), and all of the artists in the Jet Set Radio Future and WipEout soundtracks. Gaming is another huge subject, even though Ive done less of it since coming to ERAU. Shooters are good, but Ive slowly grown away from them. I like Ace Combat, and flight simulators (Surprise, surprise), but RACING GAMES steal my heart. Need for Speed is my childhood, but WipEout takes the cake (Even though its relatively new to me). I also play some Real Time Strategy, and simulation games. I have a 3DS XL with Pokémon Y (Favorite Mon is Garchomp, by the way!) and Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Ive also read too many great books to list, but special mention goes to Childhoods End by Arthur C. Clarke, and the Mortal Engines series. Ship Breaker was also a great read, and taught me a valuable life lesson, to boot. To my knowledge, the Hunt Library doesnt have an extensive fiction selection, so I hope you like books about propellers and junk. Speaking of books, I once wanted to be a published author, and the idea still hasnt left the back of my mind. Someday, I guess... I make a ton of stupid puns, you will probably both love and hate me for my humor simultaneously most days. I think thats enough information. To say that Im long-winded is an understatement. I cant wait to meet all of you during Orientation Week! You can blink now.
