Attempting to redefine mentoring outside of the traditional theoretical framework: A relational practice of developmental support provided by an individual who is acknowledged as facilitator and advisor (mentor) by another individual (mentee) who seeks to gain social capital. Social capital gained through mentoring includes psycho-social insight, knowledge, and access to material resources as well as social networks. Contemporary form of mentoring emphasizes the developmental and constructivist function of the practice such as coaching and guidance to help the mentee grow in a self-efficacious manner as opposed to the traditional apprenticeship model where an older, more experienced and powerful master-mentor who directs, sponsors, and forges the personal and professional path for their protégée.
