Attended a wonderful lecture by Prof Nadje Al-Ali from SOAS entitled, Gendering Protest and Political Transformation in the Middle East: A Transnational Feminist Perspective. She is the first scholar I have heard who debunks the non-sense that womens rights somehow prospered under the Baath. She did an excellent analysis breaking down the period of Baath rule into three phases with respect to womens issues: 1968-79; the 1980s; the sanctions period of the 1990s. Indiana Universitys Center for the Study of the Middle East has been fortunate, indeed, to be able to host such superb scholars as Prof Al-Ali over the past four years, thanks to Title VI funding. Thank to my esteemed colleague, Prof. Cigdem Balim, for having arranged todays talk and the two-day conference on Feminism and Authoritarianism that starts tomorrow.
