Attention crew, this is your captain speaking Firsts were away to the center of the universe, also known as Stirling University. However, before we go on to the match report I think an introduction of the new freshers is in order. At 1st we have Hugo the South African Slugger Dewahl. This fresher showed up to trials and started just spanking the ball. We all thought that surely he would miss eventually but no. At 2nd we have Aleksandr hothead Kvich. The polar opposite to Hugos cold head and even temper. Rumors are that the committee is running a betting pool on when he breaks his first racket. So this merry group of people sat down in a car and drove down to Stirling to play the first fixture of the season. Because Im the captain Ill start the with my match. I won. Nothing more, nothing less. I did not play good or bad. The match was a lot like water, boring but necessary. Moving on form this great description we have Rob, who was faced with the task of grinding down Lloyd Watson over the course of a singles game. Rob being Rob, had of course had a decent 5h warm up the previous day but still managed to look like the 88 year old we all know. After a solid 6-4 6-3 victory he barely even looked tired. On court number 2, Aberdeen put forth the Estonian hot head. He sure made an impact on the courts as he was swinging his racket into the net, the back curtains and all over the court (no rackets broken, sorry guys). They will never be the same again. Aside from that he unfortunately lost 6-3 5-7 12-10 after being down 9-4 in the super tiebreak. Almost a good come back but....not today. At court 1 Hugo was slugging it out against Daniel Gunn. After winning the first set 6-2 we were all thinking that this should be an easy one but this was not the case. After a tight 2nd set and 2 missed match points it was time for the second match tiebreak. No luck there either as he lost it 11-9. Daniels match analysis was that he should have lost the match as the damn guy just would not miss in the first set! Moving on to the doubles, Rob and I was paired. To paraphrase Sergio Garcia after the Ryder Cup, Rob was essentially playing 3 opponents. Despite my shortcomings with serves, returns forehands, backhands and volleys Rob managed to use his Jedi powers to get my game up to a decent level. We managed to power through 6-4 7-6. In the other doubles the tide was turning and the freshers managed to get back from a set down to first win the second set tiebreak and then a real pumping 10-3 in the super tiebreak. Tennis is not a matter of life and death, it is so much more! //Rickard Strand 1st team captain, Intergalactic space ranger.
