Attention fellow Grovers: The deadline to file to run for a Cottage Grove City Council position is this coming Tuesday, August 26th. Im running for reelection, and so far, Im running unopposed (just like the last time round). I think Im probably not a terrible councilor, and I want to keep being a councilor. But in the interests of full disclosure and a display of perhaps more transparency than is, strictly speaking, tactically wise, let me list just a few of the things that might make you think I need to be voted off the Council post haste: 1) I make a living by selling medical marijuana at a local dispensary (Shameless plug: Apothecaria, 700 Row River Road, across from the Village Green!). I dont use marijuana (and never have, in fact), but I am thoroughly convinced that its a valid form of medicine, and Ive decided to put my money -- my livelihood, in fact -- where my mouth is on the issue. 2) I am an unapologetic atheist. I have seen no convincing evidence that any gods exist, and until some such evidence arises, I reject god claims. Likewise for other supernatural entities or phenomena, like angels or ghosts or leprechauns. 3) Im skeptical that theres a realistic way of saving the existing trees on Main Street, long-term. Maybe somebody will propose a plan thats both awesome and affordable, but as of yet, I certainly havent seen it. 4) I may, on occasion, exhibit selections from a carefully curated assortment of character flaws. One of them is my profound inability to recognize most of my character flaws (Im a politician, after all), so you should probably ask around town for more details on this one. Now, I of course believe that I have good and sufficient reason for all of these things, and Im more than willing to discuss any of them with you (in depth, and at length, if youre up for it), but perhaps one or more of these things are deal-breakers for you. If so, and if you cant bear having someone like me on the Council, you have until this coming Tuesday to get down to city hall and file your declaration of candidacy (or talk someone else into doing it instead). Otherwise, youre probably going to be stuck with me for another four years, and youll have nobody to blame but yourself. Well, yourself and me. Mostly me, actually. But partially you. ;)
