Statement from Mr. Kevin Stewart, Chair of the Union County Board of Education Facilities Committee: The UCPS Facilities Committee recommended this morning to cap Newtown Elementary due to design and core capacity concerns. Beginning in December, upon approval of the full BOE, new enrollees will attend Waxhaw Elementary. It is anticipated the cap will expire at the end of the 2014-2015 school year as grandfathered fifth graders exit and smaller classes move through the ranks. It was also recommended that the future Phases 2 and 3 of the Lawson community, be reassigned to Waxhaw Elementary as well upon approval of the full BOE. As part of the process of both capping and reassignment, Waxhaw Elementary (traditionally part of the Parkwood Cluster) will become a “split feeder school”, with students from the Lawson Community, as well as 2014-2015 capped enrollees attending the Cuthbertson Cluster for Middle and High School to complete their education. This reassignment affects no currently seated students and when coupled with the overall effect of the previous redistricting, will result in a potential delay of any new construction for potentially the next five years. This will mean a tremendous savings to the taxpayers of Union County and an opportunity to pay down existing bond debt, as well make needed repairs and improve our system in the interim.
