Attention musicians, performers and artist. Please read below and support as this is for you!!!! But first we must stop under bidding ourselves with the club owners and organizers who books the gigs. You deserve what you are worth and will never get it if you bring in a 6-9 piece band to a venue or club to divide 300.00 amongst them. That is embarrassing and disrespectful to those you ask to work with you. When you underbid yourselves you underbid the rest of us who does music for a living and is trying to get top dollar because this is a business and not a hubby. We have a part that we must do in working together to make it happen as well. Please read below!!!!! Hi All— This is an important announcement: Last March, the Chairman of the Committee on Cultural Affairs of the NY City Council, Jimmy Van Bramer (D-26, Queens), introduced Resolution 207 in support of Justice for Jazz Artists. That Resolution is being debated in committee next Wednesday, September 17, 2014 @ 10AM. This a golden opportunity for jazz musicians to make their voices heard regarding the disparate treatment they have received over the years at the hands of unscrupulous club owners who have used every mechanism at their disposal to ensure that musicians have had and continue to have little say in regard to issues of working conditions, minimum pay scale, in-house recordings, and the lack of union benefits like pension—which are routinely afforded to musicians who work on Broadway and the symphonic field, but are universally unavailable to jazz artists who work in NYC’s major jazz clubs, an industry that generates tens of millions of dollars annually towards our local economy. This is a formal invitation to attend the City Council Committee hearing on the J4JA Resolution, which will take place Wednesday, September 17, 2014, in the Committee Room in City Hall, 260 Broadway, NYC. By attending this hearing you will be showing your support and encouragement for the concept of good faith negotiations between jazz clubs—like the Blue Note, Birdland, Dizzy’s Club Coca, Iridium, the Jazz Standard, and the Village Vanguard—and AFM, Local 802. WHAT: Debate and Testimony of Justice for Jazz Artists Resolution 207 Joint Meeting of NY City Council Committees on Cultural Affairs and Civil Service and Labor WHEN: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 TIME: 10:00AM Sharp WHERE: Committee Room in City Hall, 260 Broadway, NYC Please respond as soon as possible to let me know if you will be able to attend this important meeting.
