Attentive students at Boston College High School have completed a series of six videoconference modules with the Hall of Fame over the last three days. Each of the eighth grade classes participated in “Cultural Diversity: Diversity in the Dugout.” The students learned about the process of immigration, its impact on the game of baseball, and the transition of Negro leaguers players to the major leagues after the history-making efforts of Jackie Robinson. The students at BC High also learned about the historic first all-minority lineup in major league history, which debuted on September 1, 1971. Hall of Famers Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell played that day for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 10-7. A little more than a month later, the Pirates won the world championship over the Baltimore Orioles. Our thanks go out to the teachers and students at Boston College High School for a memorable series of videoconferences. (Photo courtesy of the National Baseball Hall of Fame Library)
