Auburn University: Beet ‘Bama Secret Weapon By S. Ferguson et al, published in Nitric Oxide, October 2014. The Auburn University football team may have secret weapon. Football teams are claiming beet root improves their athletic performance. It’s not pregame hype, a study from Kansas State University supports the claim and they say it also benefits heart failure patients. Recently, the Auburn University football team revealed its pregame ritual of taking beetroot concentrate, or beet juice, before each game. The juice may have contributed to the team’s recent winning season — and one exercise physiologist who has been studying the supplement for several years says that may be the case. The beetroot juice consumption resulted in a 38 percent higher blood flow to the skeletal muscles during exercise and was preferential to the less-oxygenated, fast-twitch muscles. Dr. Smith comments: I first heard about beet juicing in a medical seminar a few years ago. The reports were about Olympic athletes finding performance improvement with this wonderful red root. I also love the golden beets (when I can find them). It is also well accepted that the increased nitric oxide production from beets can help blood flow to the penis and thus be an aid for erection dysfunction. Instead of juicing, I add a beet to my daily Green Smoothie. It adds a lovely color (red or golden) and adds a lot of healthy fiber as well as nutrients. Juicing would concentrate the benefits even more but I am more of a “smoothie person” than a “juicer”. Whichever way you go, keep beets in mind as a wonderful addition to your daily nutrition routine.
