Auggie got a very special greeting from the girls up front today! - TopicsExpress

Auggie got a very special greeting from the girls up front today! The volunteer coordinator had a plate with some birthday cake on it with Auggie’s name written on the saran wrap. It was from Miss M’s birthday cake her daughter had delivered for lunch time to share with everyone and Miss M and her daughter thought to have a piece saved for Auggie. When first entering from the front office area, we met a new friend. Because now we have two new friends here with the same name, I need to call them something different in my stories so we will have Mr M#1 and Mr M #2. Well Mr M #2 met Auggie for the first time tonight and was so taken with him. One of the CNA’s asked him if he would like his picture taken with Auggie and he said YES! He proceeded to get down on the floor by Auggie. Once he was sitting down on the floor, I took their picture and told him I would bring the picture to him next week to hang in his room. I forgot to ask for his permission to post the picture so hopefully next week, it’s so adorable! After I snapped the picture, Auggie leaned over and started giving him kisses. Mike then lay down on the floor and Auggie went up close by him. It took some convincing by the nursing staff but we all convinced him that the floor was too cold to be laying there petting Auggie. Mr M #2 decided that he wanted to go on our visits with us. We took off down the hall with him holding onto one of the handles of Auggie’s leash while I held the second handle in back of them. I have to tell you these double handled leashes are the best invention ever for a Therapy Dog team! I use it so often with the kids and our other friends that love walking Auggie! The only time I need to really be careful if when they are in a wheel chair because Auggie doesn’t like his toes to get run over! We headed into see Miss G and she was kinda surprised to see someone else joining our visits. I think this was a really good way for Mr M #2 to meet some people here while we did our visits together. It was a win/win. Except that after only a few minutes with visiting with Miss G, he thought we had visited long enough and wanted to continue on and grabbed Auggie’s leash again. He did decide that when Miss G and I kept gabbing to go sit in the hallway on a chair and wait for us. Miss G said her family might try to come in on a day we visit and meet the dog she keeps talking about. I look forward to that! Miss G is so sweet! She is so concerned about me traveling in the bad weather and told me never to worry if the roads are bad, that they all would rather us stay safe than to get hurt trying to get there to see them. We did several other room visits with Mr M #2 but I think after one hallway he got kinda tuckered out and handed me back full responsibility of Auggie’s leash and said he looked forward to seeing us next week. We started down the other end of the hallway and one of our special friends looked so sad and upset when we walked in. She is usually so happy and talkative but told us she was waiting for the ambulance to get there to pick her up. She needed to be checked out for some pain she was having. I told her Auggie and I would be thinking about her and she said she sure appreciated being able to visit with us for a few minutes. She said it calmed her nerves and told us she loved us very much, and I told her we loved her too! Another awesome proof of what these furry critters do is when we went in to visit Mr M #1. He is very hard of hearing but his daughter was in with him tonight also. The CNA was checking his BP and said it was a little higher than it should be. I told the daughter about how there are studies about Therapy Dogs and how petting a dog will sometimes lower blood pressure. So we decided to test this out. Mr M #1 spent some time petting Auggie and the CNA sat there with us and visited. She then checked his BP again and guess what………yep, MUCH better! I kinda felt like the TV show “Myth Busters” and we proved the magic of fur did help! On to our BIG visit of the night! Before walking into Miss M’s room, I put on Auggie’s Happy Birthday cake hat and as we walked in I started singing Happy Birthday to Miss M. I cannot tell you how big the smile of her face was! After I got done signing, I told Miss M that she must really like me because she didn’t cover her ears at my squawking while trying to sing to her. I thanked her for saving us a piece of her birthday cake and commented on how lovely her flowers were that her daughter and son-in-law sent. She was pretty impressed that Auggie had gone shopping to get her a card, a box of candy, and a tin of butter cookies. She asked me to take off all the wrapping on the packages so the treats were ready for her to taste when she wanted to. We talked about all the snow New York got this past week because that is where she is originally from. She loved hearing stories about Auggie and my dogs playing in the snow. She did say before we left that she felt very special and spoiled on her birthday. I gave her a great big hug and told her we would see her next week on Thanksgiving and told her Auggie would wear his special turkey hat. So when walking back to the van…I was holding Auggie’s leash, his Therapy Dog bag, and balancing a plate with cake on it….this is when my Auggie turns back into a normal dog and does what normal dogs do and decided in the middle of the parking lot to do a #2. I’m like REALLY, how the heck and I going to balance all this in my hands AND manage to pick up Auggie’s “creation” and put it in a poo bag? I just kept thinking in my mind, like the saying goes…”boys will be boys” and yes “dogs will be dogs”. Needless to say the cleanup mission was accomplished safely so no cake was spilled and Auggie and I enjoyed it once we got home! I have to admit that I helped eat the frosting! LOL!! Happy Birthday my dear Miss M!!!!
