August 14, 2013 Dear Marvin Elementary Families, Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year at Marvin Elementary School! We are very excited that your child will be joining or returning to our school community. A wonderful year of making new friends, experiencing new opportunities and especially lots of new learning awaits your child/children this year. Upcoming events and general information: The First Day of School The first day of school is Monday, August 26, 2013 for students in grades1 through 5. Kindergarten will be on a staggered schedule. Our entire student body will be in school starting Tuesday, September 3, 2013. Bus Transportation An insert from the UCPS Transportation Department is included in this letter. Information will include bus safety rules, bus numbers and bus stops with approximate pick up/drop off times. If you do not receive a letter from the Transportation Department it may mean that your child has not been assigned to a bus. Transportation representatives will be available at our Open House or you can stop by the front office prior to Open House to complete the necessary paperwork to place your child on the bus. Students are always welcome to arrive and leave in the car rider line. Arrival and Dismissal Process in the Car Rider Line Students may be dropped off in the car rider line beginning at 7:05 am. Students will be supervised in the front foyer until the first bell rings at 7:10 am. At 7:10 am students move to the cafeteria for breakfast or to their classrooms. Students are to arrive no later than 7:30 am and will be dismissed at 2:00 pm. Child Nutrition/Cafeteria Students may purchase a lunch, or eat a lunch brought from home. Menus and prepayment information can be found on the Union County Public Schools website at ucps.k12.nc.us. Scroll down the left hand column and click “Students”. You will see a link titled, “Lunch Menus”. This link will take you to the Child Nutrition page where you will find additional information. Students returning to Marvin Elementary and those students coming from other UCPS schools will keep their cafeteria serving number from last year. We welcome parents to join their children for lunch; however we need time to make sure routines are established and the cafeteria is running smoothly. We hope to be open to visitors by mid-September. We will let you know when we are ready for lunch guests. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Birthday Treats Due to concerns about monitoring the many students with dietary restrictions and food allergies, food treats distributed to classrooms for birthday celebrations will no longer be permitted. Our first and foremost concern is the safety of our children and it is very difficult to monitor the many and varied food items brought into the building. We do recognize birthdays are very special occasions and want your child to feel special. In lieu of a birthday food treat you could: • provide an individual treat for your child • provide a book for your child’s classroom library • donate a book to the school Media Center in your child’s honor • purchase a new indoor recess game for the classroom • provide a small, nonfood item such as a pencil to be given to each member of the class at the end of the day (An additional suggestion might be to gift wrap any item given to the Media Center or classroom, like books or games. The honor of opening the gift and presenting it to the class would be given to the “birthday child”.) Afterschool We offer an afterschool program at Marvin Elementary. Ms. Mary Sampson, our After School Director, can be reached at 704-843-9466 or [email protected]. Please call Ms. Sampson with any questions. Orientation for Families New to Marvin Elementary and Kindergarten This orientation will be held Thursday, August 22nd from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. At this time, some of our staff members will be introduced and school procedures/routine will be highlighted. Representatives from our PTO will be available to share membership information and involvement opportunities. We have planned this event for parents only and request that children not attend. General Back to School Open House/Meet the Teacher Your child’s teacher will be calling to introduce themselves prior to our Marvin Open House on Friday, August 23, 2013. This drop-in style event will be an opportunity for you and your child to visit classrooms, meet teachers and obtain information regarding transportation. This is a very exciting time for the entire school community and we look forward to many families attending. To make this event manageable we have divided the three hour session into sections. Families are to attend based on the first letter of the students’ last name. The schedule is as follows: 1pm – 2pm Student last name A-F 2pm – 3pm Student last name G-N 3pm – 4pm Student last name O-Z We ask that you attend during your assigned time frame, due to the large number of families in our school and limited parking. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding. General Reminders Visitors You must first stop by the office, sign in and pick up a visitor sticker. If you walk your student to school, you may sign in and pick up a visitor sticker at the “walk stop” entrance on the side of the building. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Volunteers Please remember that in order to volunteer at Marvin (examples: chaperoning field trips, volunteering in the classrooms/Media Center, serving as a Room Parent) you will need to be an approved volunteer with Union County Public Schools. There is an application process, which involves a background check. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, on-line applications can be found at https://volunteers.ucps.k12.nc.us/register.php . The 2013-2014 volunteer application period began on July 1, 2013. If you have served as a volunteer in the past and kept your application current by volunteering one time, then there is no need to apply again. Book Bag Suggestion When shopping for your child’s book bag, please do not purchase a rolling book bag/suitcase. Students struggle to manage these rolling bags safely in the hallways and on the buses. Important dates to remember: Thursday, August 22nd Orientation for Kindergarten and Families New to Marvin Elementary Time: 6:00pm to 7:00pm Location: Cafeteria Please note: This is a presentation and will begin at 6:00pm. This session has been planned for parents only. Friday, August 23rd General Back to School Open House/Meet the Teacher This is a drop in style event. Please arrange to attend at your assigned time. This event is for our families and students. 1pm – 2pm Student last name A-F 2pm – 3pm Student last name G-N 3pm – 4pm Student last name O-Z Monday, August 26th Students in grades 1 through 5 will attend school on a regular schedule. The entire staff and I look forward to meeting your child and feel very privileged to be a part of your child’s learning journey this year. If you have any questions concerning this information, please call the school at 704-843-5399 for clarification. Thank you for sharing your children with us. Sincerely, Lynn Cole, Principal
