August 15, 1935: Were saying Happy Birthday! to Jim Dale, whos turning 79 today! Jim, of course, wrote the lyrics of The Seekers international smash hit Georgy Girl, for which Tom Springfield wrote the music. There are many facets to Jims long and illustrious career. As a singer, he had a string of hit singles in the UK in the 1950s, all produced by George Martin. They included Be My Girl, Just Born (To Be Your Baby) and Crazy Dream. As an actor, he made his debut in the British film Raising The Wind, before going on to star in a string of Carry On films. As a stage actor, he has been nominated for five Tony Awards, and in 1980 he won his first, for Barnum. On Broadway, he has appeared in Joe Egg, Me And My Girl, and The Threepenny Opera. Most notably, Jim is the voice of Harry Potter in the US, having recorded all seven books in the Potter series (winning two Grammy Awards for doing so); he also narrates the Harry Potter video games, and is in the Guinness Book Of World Records for creating 134 different character voices for one audio book. Earlier this year, Jim starred in his own one-man show in the US - Just Jim Dale - which celebrates his 50+ years in show business. (Information and images from The Graham Simpson Archive).
