August 15: Jeremiah 26–28 Judgement messages continue to - TopicsExpress

August 15: Jeremiah 26–28 Judgement messages continue to dominate in Jeremiahs prophesying here, and he again experiences cruel treatment because of his preaching against the sins of the people. Jeremiah 26 – Persecution. Jeremiahs preaching upset the people and he was arrested. Here is another case of that precarious situation for Jeremiah. •Message provoking the persecution: the site of the message was the Temple; the subject of the message was judgment upon the Temple (it would become like Shiloh). •Meanness in the persecution: the promptness of the meanness (as soon as he stopped preaching he was take prisoner); the popularity of the meanness (the crowd at the Temple supported the arrest). •Mercy in the persecution: the hearing for Jeremiah (by the princes who came to see what was going on in the Temple); the ruling for Jeremiah (Jeremiah was exonerated); the protecting of Jeremiah (Ahikam is especially named as one who protected Jeremiah). Jeremiah 27 – Policy. This is the yoke message of Jeremiah.•Message for foreign nations: Jeremiah made and gave yokes to ambassadors of a number of different nations and told them to tell their rulers to submit to Babylon or God would punish them, and spurn the prophets who say otherwise. •Message for Judah: Jeremiah also gave a yoke to Zedekiah, the king of Judah. The message for Zedekiah spoke of submitting (to Babylon); spurning (false prophets); and spoiling (Temple vessels that still remained in Temple that Nebuchnezzar had not taken with him previously would eventually be taken by him as spoils of victory). Jeremiah 28 – Prevaricator. Hananiah the false prophet is the focus in this chapter. •Predictions of Hananiah: that the vessels taken from the Temple would be returned in two years (Jeremiah had prophesied that they would be gone for a long time). •Proving of Hananiah: Jeremiah said the test of a prophet was that his predictions must come true, otherwise he is a false prophet. •Presuming of Hananiah: he broke the wooden yoke Jeremiah had which was symbolic of the Babylonian yoke that would come upon Judah and said God would break the yoke of Babylon. •Punishing of Hananiah: Jeremiah told Hananiah in no uncertain words that his message was a lie, and that he would die shortly, which he did. —Butlers Daily Bible Reading (1) Synopsis
