August 16, 1963: Jack Ely, lead singer for The Kingsmen leaves the group. Although hed sang lead on Louie Louie he was forced out of the band when the drummers mother announced that she had registered the name of the group and, therefore, owned it. She declared that from this point on drummer Lynn Easton would be the singer and that Ely could be the drummer if he wanted. He doesnt, and quits. Louie Louie would soon become a smash hit, with most people not knowing that its Elys vocals on the record.
