August, 23: In order to stop the child labour and to bring mass awareness among the people, a daylong awareness on Child Labour was conducted here at Zilla Bhawan Mangan in North Sikkim which was being organized by the Labour Department, Government of Sikkim. The function also saw the awareness on Implementation of Building & Other Construction Workers (RECS) Act 1996. The Joint Commissioner, DS Kunwar underlined about the Prohibitioin & Regulation Act, 1986 on Child Labour that the children below the age of 14 years should not be engaged in domestic works, construction site, hotel, tea shops, etc. The JC further informed that the Act defines a child as any person who has not completed his fourteenth year of age. He further stressed that if anyone violates the act he/she will punished with a fine of Rs. 20,000/- or imprisonment of one to two years. Mr. Kunwar also highlighted on Implementation of Building & Other Construction Workers (RECS) Act 1996 that the registered beneficiaries (labour) will be covered under an insurance policy worth Rs. 1 lakh in case of accidental death and also added that the beneficiaries will get other welfare facilities based on their need like medicine, injury compensation etc. Likewise, KK Pradhan, Secretary Labour Deptt highlighted that the child labour acta passed during the year 1986 has been implemented all over the country and further state that children has the time of playing and studying not for the workers. The ADC North, Raj Yadav also underlined that there should be more awareness among the people in order to eradicate the child labour and urged all the people that there should be contribution from the public and every stake holder and the people should cooperate it that no child is suffer by the child labour. Interaction session was also held where the queries made by the students and the panchayats were explained by the Board. The Chief guest, Topda Bhutia Chairman, Labour Welfare Board, Govt of Sikkim urged all the people that whatever the department had shared their knowledge in awareness programme regarding the child labour and labour laws are very essential to be implemented and should cooperate it with the department. Earlier, the function was welcome by Asst. Labour Commissioner, BP Bhattarai and ended with the vote of thanks by Arjun Kumar Sharma, Labour Inspector. The function was attended by District officials, Panchayat members, councilors of Mangan Nagar Panchayat students from Mangan SSS, and the general public
